CHAPTER SEVEN

BABIES

Geoff wasn’t so sure this was a good idea now that he was in the forest, but he couldn’t stop himself from following his instincts. He had been driven away from Jace and Daisey, assured by some primordial part of his brain that they were simply women and incapable of handling a situation like this without his guidance—

I didn’t take you for a misogynist, Geoff.

He shook his head, hoping the detestable thought would leave him. It stayed latched to his brain, insisting that if he didn’t handle this, it would never get handled at all.

The ground between the house and the forest had been flat, but the area behind the trees was sloped and hilly. He careened down a leave-decorated slant and his feet plodded into a mushy mud pile.

Cripes. There go my shoes. He thought as he skidded up an incline and worked his way around a shallow streamlet. It was cold in the woods, just as it had been unexpectedly cold inside the Dobbsin house.

Daisey is right. We shouldn’t be here.

He heard a raspy chuckle from behind him.

Geoff turned around and watched as a flash of naked skin vanished behind a knotty tree.

“Hey! Hey, you!” Geoff dashed toward the tree. “This is private property, asshole! C’mon!”

Another laugh resounded through the woods. Geoff heard a snicker of crunching leaves and watched as the naked figure darted out from behind the tree and ducked away from sight. He crawled on all fours, which alarmed Geoff, since the man was more dexterous than he had imagined. Still, Geoff couldn’t get a good look at the weirdo. He moved so quickly, all Geoff could perceive was his white flesh and his scuttling limbs, then he was out of sight.

“Hey!” Geoff called, coming around the bush and being surprised that the man was nowhere to be seen. Geoff turned on his heels and scanned the forest. Where had the fucker gone?

“Ah-Ha!” The stranger hooted.

Geoff followed the noise, squeezing between two shrub laden trees and found himself in a sunlit meadow. He saw the crooked end of a wrought iron fence leaning like a shipwreck at the far end of the plot and realized that he had stepped foot into a long-abandoned cemetery. Geoff felt his pulse thud in his ears as he stumbled around the corroded, nameless headstones. They had been beaten in by the weather and by a general lack of attention.

That’s a sad thought. When you die, you expect your name to live immortal through your grave, don’t you? Well, here’s proof that nothing but nothing lasts forever—

He heard the naked man laugh from a distance. The creep sounded like a cartoon character, yuck-yuck-yucking away as if he had just been told a new joke. Geoff realized that he was starting to hate that laugh.

If I get my hands on this bastard, I’ll wring his goddamn neck.

Geoff had never felt so angry before. He really did believe that if given the opportunity the eccentric pervert was in danger of being killed.
